The TV shows I grew up on were wholesome, 15 minute episodes, with a meaningful plot- or playful plot to the episode. And movies like Aladdin, Lion King, and Hercules were some of my favourites, even now.
Now as I look at what shows kids are watching today, I just have to feel like yelping out “What the junk??” on shows like “The Suite Life of Zack and Cody” and “Hannah Montana” . They have no real value to them, sometimes I just want to blurt out “How can you let your kids watch this..Junk??” As I was talking to a friend today on Facebook, she mentioned someone who said the Disney Company was getting kids involved in politics, which in my opinion, depending on the way of teaching it- is okay.
I recall one of my All Time Favourite episodes of Hey Arnold was the Christmas Special from 1996 . The plot revolves around finding Mr. Hyunh’s long lost daughter. He gave her to the US troops in Vietnam during Saigon, and he didn’t see her for 20 years. Thus Arnold and Gerald go to great lengths just before Christmas- to find a record of where his daughter might be. I’m not going to go into spoilers for the rest of the episode, as I’m sure many of you either already seen it, or in the case that you didn’t see it yet, I highly recommend it.
Entertainment in general has turned to a lower standard; there are more R-rated and PG-13 movies then in the 90’s. Sex seems to be encouraged everywhere- even some school-aged rhymes I remember with different wording, was changed from “Strawberry Shortcake cream on top, what is the name of your sweetheart?” to” Strawberry Shortcake cream on top,(something about what you wear for your boyfriend or something)” which to me, is like “Ugh, What are they Teaching in those schools?” (That’s for another post)
Entertainment reflects the society it comes from, and since the 90’s in my short 18 years so far, society has downgraded to worse, and We the younger generation, have to make it better for those that come after us.
Does this world seem to be getting darker and darker by the minute thanks to politicians and other evils of the world? Do the TV shows of today (both for the young and old) reflect that?
Ok, so this was originally for an assignment today during my Faith and Media class (we had a sub as the teacher wasn't there). It's was originally talking about the church and I've posted it in other places too. Anyway, what I wrote in the course of about fifteen minutes about media's influence on ALL of us and not just teens and kids as the original assignment asked.
The medias of television, internet and entertainment buy and sell teens to make a quick dollar by influencing their young minds to buy the product, or in some cases votes. The world today is full of big corporations who sponsor certain politicians and television entertainment companies. It is the greed that corrupts today’s world.
Ads are everywhere, be it for voting for a politician to buying a new product. Commercials or ads on the internet and television attempt to brainwash kids and teens into thinking they should lose weight, buy a certain toy, or vote for someone in government. Many companies also use lies to appeal to an audience, like an ad for cigarettes stating that they are healthy, which has been proven by science otherwise to cause cancer and other ailments.
Teens can stand up to the media giants by boycotting some major media corporations, even if fully avoiding them is impossible. They can also ignore the media’s influence and be themselves if they can.
We can educate teens on the media’s influence and its effects. We can also note how the media’s influence can be bad. The more we can educate them the better.
As I sit here thinking of what to write my first real post on here about- I sit staring at one of my many Bonanza fictions, this one was one where I had lots of inspiration, and the scenes came rolling into my head like rapids in a stream.
In my time, before I started in my Catholic high school- I was spiritual, yes- but with many of the influences God has given me- it has lead me down a more righteous life more devoted to God then I've ever been in all my 18 years on earth.
A time came a while ago- at the beginning of Holy Week, where I was as scared as I've ever been. A bit of a long story short- this took my creative energy out of me- but that week- I knew who I wanted to turn to was God. I went to 3/5 of the Holy Week services (my school has morning Mass alot- and I had off that Thursday and Friday- and my immediate family isn't that religious) and I had no means of transportation to get to the other services- be it in a Lutheran church or Catholic. My Easter this year- my mind was still in the fog of worry over the future- something I usually just take as a given. After a break that was mainly "recovery" as I'll call it, from my mind being soo stressed. I watched Brady Bunch and some other reruns, to keep my mind occupied, and at least by then it seemed to be getting calmer, and galloping down the route toward a calm sea.
A week into school after Easter break- within the course of that week, and maybe a bit of that week- I found myself at an even greater inner peace then I've ever experienced.
